Medical Services at Baptist Women’s Health Center
Comprehensive Breast Program
The Comprehensive Breast Program provides a vehicle for women to seek medical expertise, support and answers to their questions, as well as specialized coordinated care for all of their breast health needs. Our main goal is women’s health and wellness. All of the physicians and specialists involved in the treatment of breast cancer patients at our women’s care center are members of this network, including radiologists, oncologists, surgeons, plastic surgeons, pathologists, genetic counselors, breast nurse navigators as well as nurse practitioners.
Annual Breast Cancer Screenings
Some things can wait. Your annual mammogram can’t.
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of your important preventive health care screenings may have been delayed. But now that we know more about this virus and how to protect you, we encourage you to schedule your annual mammogram as soon as possible. It can make all the difference because the earlier a cancer is diagnosed, the easier it is to cure and the more options you have for treatment.
The Comprehensive Breast Program includes a staff of dedicated genetic counselors who help identify patients who have a greater chance of developing breast and possible other cancers because of their personal and family history.
A blood or saliva sample can examine an individual’s DNA to determine if he/she has an inherited gene mutation that can increase the risk to develop cancers. Certain inherited gene mutations can sometimes increase a woman’s risk to develop breast cancer up to 85% during her lifetime.
If an individual is found to have an inherited gene mutation, there is discussion about how to screen that person more closely to detect cancer at an early stage and also for possible risk-reducing options to help lower the risk of developing certain cancers.
A risk assessment and genetic testing can help you develop a breast cancer screening and management plan with your doctor. Take this short quiz to learn more about factors that could possibly put you in the high-risk category.
