Baptist DeSoto Maternity Care

Becoming a mom is one of life’s most rewarding milestones. At Baptist, we understand not only the importance of your prenatal care, but also the benefits of having a comfortable setting for labor and delivery.

Beautiful Beginnings at Baptist

At Baptist DeSoto, we believe every birth is a beautiful beginning, and we are here to assist you and your family with your transition to new, or renewed, parenthood. Our service and care are designed to help you to learn as much as possible about your baby’s needs and your own well-being. And our family-focused approach enables us to personalize our care for each family based on your values and beliefs.

We recommend that you discuss your birth plans in advance with your obstetrician, pediatrician and family members. You will want their support so you can have the positive birth experience you desire. When you arrive at the hospital, please inform your nurse of your desires, as well. While you cannot prepare for every possibility, having a birth plan will ensure your preferences are known, and we will make every effort to accommodate your wishes.

The Women’s Pavilion

The Women’s Pavilion at Baptist DeSoto is a facility dedicated to the care of women and newborns. It features an advanced infant security system to ensure your and your baby’s safety. Our nurses and staff have extensive experience in caring for obstetrical, surgical, chronic and acute care gynecological patients.

Labor, Delivery, and Recovery (LDR) Rooms

Every birth experience is unique, and our goal is to make your experience memorable, joyful and safe, so we do all we can to ensure you can go through labor, delivery and recovery in one room. Each of our nine private LDR rooms is specially designed to provide a comfortable and intimate setting for you, your newborn and your family. Each room is equipped with a radiant warming bed to keep your baby warm.

Postpartum Unit and Level II Nursery

The 24-bed postpartum mother/baby unit offers comfortable rooms with private baths and couches for family members. Our Level II nursery is equipped with 10 nursery beds and provides enhanced care and treatment for newborns with special needs.

Obstetric Emergency Department

Baptist DeSoto’s five-bed obstetric emergency department (OBED), located in the Women’s Pavilion, is staffed around the clock with board-certified OB/GYN doctors to care for you when something doesn’t feel right. You can count on us to provide immediate care for pregnancy or postpartum related emergencies.

Baby-Friendly Designation

Baptist DeSoto has earned the Baby Friendly® designation. This prestigious international award recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

The honor was bestowed by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The criteria for the designation is based on Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and are designed to set the standards for the best possible breastfeeding support for mother and infant in the maternity setting, ensuring high-quality care in this critical area of mother/baby care.

The Baby-Friendly designation is for a period of five years. Each year, Baptist DeSoto reports statistics related to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding to achieve re-designation.

First Hour

The first hour of a child’s life is critical to breastfeeding success. That’s why we developed First Hour, a wonderful opportunity for you and your newborn to spend some quality time, skin-to-skin. After delivery, your infant will be gently dried and then placed on your chest under your gown, wearing nothing but a hat and diaper. Our specially trained nurses will help you position yourself and your baby for comfort and ease of breastfeeding. We will delay any medical tasks until you have had a chance to get to know your new baby. Even if your plan is to feed your baby formula, skin-to-skin care has many other benefits. Even dad can participate in skin-to-skin care if mom doesn't feel up to it or if she is in surgery.

Benefits of First Hour

Breastfeeding: Studies have shown that mothers who participate in skin-to-skin care during the first hour of life have increased milk production and longer duration of breastfeeding. Mothers are more confident in their ability to successfully breastfeed, as well.

Promotion of bonding: When mothers and babies engage during First Hour, it promotes verbal and affectionate interaction. This contact lays the foundation for the mother/baby bond.

Pain relief: Studies have shown that painful procedures are less painful if done while baby is being held skin-to-skin. In fact, babies that have had the opportunity to participate in skin-to-skin care cry less in general — even after they are discharged from the hospital.

Epidurals: The Safe, Effective Option for a Pain-free Delivery

Managing the pain of labor and delivery is important to every woman’s birthing experience. That’s why using an epidural is the most commonly used pain management approach. Epidurals are very effective and extremely safe with minimal risk of infection or adverse reactions, as Baptist anesthesiologist Dr. Frederick Jones explains.
