Baptist Memphis PGY1 Community Residency Program

To build upon the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. 3.1.b Individualized Program Description.

The Community-Based PGY-1 Pharmacy Residency Program at Baptist Memphis is aimed at developing clinical leaders in community pharmacy practice. The resident will acquire knowledge for advanced problem solving, enhance professional practice and advance the growth of clinical judgment through the available education experiences. The residents will also further the development of their leadership and teaching skills which can be applied in many pharmacist positions.

Specific program structure and emphasis is individualized for each resident based initially on the resident's self-identified level of knowledge, skill and interest in various community pharmacy practice areas. Thereafter, the program is customized with preceptor and program facilitator input in addition to resident progress. The common goal of all involved is to promote the best plan for each resident’s overall experience achieving the most optimal outcome. The Baptist Memphis Community-Based PGY1 pharmacy residency is a 12-month program which is composed of concentrated rotations and longitudinal rotations following the six week orientation period. Focused training and staffing areas include Specialty Pharmacy, Transitions of Care, Discharge Medication Delivery, Practice Management and Outpatient Pharmacy Services, including mail order, ED and Plaza retail pharmacies

Walnut Grove Plaza Pharmacy: outpatient pharmacy serving Baptist employees, patients from physicians’ offices and clinics in the vicinity, and patients being discharged from the hospital.  Pharmacists work closely with in-patient pharmacists and case managers to facilitate discharge medications, especially for self-pay patients.  Services include a Meds to Beds delivery program as well as provision of post-operative prescriptions for specific surgery populations.

Baptist Specialty Pharmacy: specialty pharmacy managing patients with disease states requiring specialty medications.  These medications are often high costs, require specific prior authorizations, may require additional REMS or safety monitoring, and may be restricted distribution.  Some disease states requiring specialty medications include cancer, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, Crohn’s disease, and rheumatoid arthritis

Baptist Mail Order Pharmacy: mail order pharmacy that serves Baptist employees, most often for employees’ maintenance medications.  We are able to have medications delivered directly to employees’ homes, while offering the Baptist system a financial savings through decreased fees to third-party pharmacies

Baptist Memphis Hospital Emergency Department Pharmacy: our newest pharmacy in the ED lobby. The goal is to provide ED patients with accessible prescription services, especially after hours of most retail pharmacies. The ED Pharmacy will also supplement Plaza Pharmacy’s role in helping with in-patient discharge medications by providing Meds to Beds services evening and weekends.
