Conveniently located just off I-55, Baptist DeSoto’s emergency department treats more than 60,000 patients each year from DeSoto county and surrounding areas, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. And as North Mississippi’s population continues to grow, so do we. We’ve updated and expanded our ER with 55 beds, more seating in our waiting room for new arrivals, and three additional triage rooms to help reduce wait time for arriving patients.

The Obstetrics ER

In the summer of 2018, Baptist DeSoto opened our first emergency department dedicated to expectant mothers. Our obstetrics emergency room is staffed around the clock with board-certified OB/GYN doctors to care for women and give you added reassurance when something doesn’t feel right. You can count on us to provide immediate care for pregnancy or post-partum related emergencies until your OB/GYN can arrive or, if needed, administer complete care.

Advanced Cardiovascular ER Services

Baptist DeSoto’s emergency department also offers advanced cardiovascular care and services with Stern Cardiovascular doctors and specialists. Part of one of the largest emergency departments in North Mississippi, our comprehensive heart program and emergency services are accredited by the American College of Cardiology as a chest pain treatment center.

Comprehensive Heart Program

Baptist is leading the way for better heart care in Mississippi with innovative practices and technology. And now, we’re accredited by the American College of Cardiology for chest pain, heart failure and atrial fibrillation treatment. We offer advanced cardiovascular procedures and give you exclusive access to the renowned cardiologists of the Stern Cardiovascular Foundation.

The Comprehensive Heart Program and our emergency department are accredited by the Society of Chest Pain Centers, which evaluates hospitals on their ability to assess, diagnose and treat patients who may be experiencing a heart attack. Our cardiac response rate averages 30 minutes faster than the national best practice benchmark. Our cardiac catheterization lab and electrophysiology (EP) lab teams have been recognized by the American Heart Association with “Get With the Guidelines” awards as top performers in patient care.

HeartScore is a 10-minute CT scan of your heart that uses no needles and no fasting; you don't even have to run on a treadmill. If you smoke or have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and/or a family history of coronary artery disease, you could be at risk. Please call for more information or to schedule an appointment. Your results will be sent to your physician or one of our board-certified cardiologists for review.

Cardiac catheterization is a common procedure that allows doctors to open up arteries and detect potential heart issues. Traditionally, this procedure is performed via the femoral artery near the groin and can be very painful. We offer an alternative: Radial artery cardiac catheterization, performed through the radial artery at the wrist, is much more comfortable and often allows patients to leave the hospital on the day they have the procedure.

Other heart and vascular programs at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto include aneurysm repair, angioplasty stenting, cardiopulmonary, carotid bypass, echo, and peripheral vascular.

The Pritikin program at Baptist DeSoto provides you with support and education as you recover and adapt after a heart event, such as a heart attack, helping you set and monitor your health and wellness goals. Baby-Friendly Designation

Baptist DeSoto is first in the Baptist Memorial Health Care system to be designated a Baby Friendly® hospital. This prestigious international award recognizes hospitals and birthing centers that offer breastfeeding mothers the information, confidence and skills needed to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies.

The honor was bestowed by Baby-Friendly USA, Inc., the U.S. authority for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). The criteria for the designation is based on Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding and are designed to set the standards for the best possible breastfeeding support for mother and infant in the maternity setting, ensuring high-quality care in this critical area of mother/baby care.

The Baby-Friendly designation is for a period of five years. Each year, Baptist DeSoto will report statistics related to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding to achieve re-designation.
